Stopping and starting

Take a machine and everything on it offline, and bring it back.

Stopping a machine takes everything on it offline and keeps your data. A stopped machine is still billed: to stop paying, remove it instead. You stop and start each machine on its own, from its card on the project's Resources page, and the project's other machines keep running.

Stop a machine

  1. Open the project's Resources page.
  2. On the machine's card, open Actions, choose Stop machine-1 and confirm.

The card shows Stopping machine-1… while the machine shuts down. Once it has stopped:

  • every web service, worker, cron job, database and key value store on it is offline
  • its databases and key value stores show Stopped, unless a standby on another running machine keeps them serving
  • the project's pages show This project is stopped. or, with several machines, which machines are stopped
  • your data stays on the machine's disk

While a machine is stopped you can't deploy to it, create services on it or change its size. Storage buckets aren't on a machine, so they stay available.

Start a machine

  1. Open the project's Resources page.
  2. On the machine's card, click Start machine-1 and confirm.

The card shows Starting machine-1…. This usually takes a few minutes, and databases and key value stores come back last.

If stopping or starting doesn't finish, the card shows Needs attention with a Retry button.

Billing while stopped

A stopped machine is still billed at the same price as when it runs, and service fees continue. To stop paying for a machine, remove it once nothing runs on it, or delete the project.

Stopped or suspended

A project can also be suspended. All its machines stop and visitors see the maintenance page, but you can't start the machines yourself:

  • A project suspended because your credits ran out starts again automatically when you add enough credits. See Running out of credits.
  • If Appentic suspended the project, its pages say This project is suspended. Contact support to restore it. See Support.

When a suspension ends, every stopped machine in the project starts again, including any you had stopped yourself.
