Fixed outbound address
One public address that all your services reach the internet from, for banks, payment providers and partners that only accept listed addresses.
A fixed outbound address gives your project one public address for its outgoing web requests. Use it when a bank, payment provider or partner API only accepts connections from addresses on its list.
Without one, each service reaches the internet from the address of the machine it runs on, so a project with several machines uses several addresses. With one, every web service, worker and cron job sends its web requests through the same address, whichever machine or zone it runs on.
Turn it on
- Open the project's Networking page and select the Outbound address tab.
- Choose the machine whose address to use. Only running machines are listed.
- Click Turn on. The button shows the monthly price.
Your services restart once to start using it. The tab then shows the address, for example 162.55.171.254. Give that address to whoever needs to allow you.
If it can't be set up, the tab and the project's Events page say so. Click Retry to set it up again on the same machine, or choose another machine first.
How it works
Your services send web requests through a small proxy on the machine you chose, so they leave from that machine's public address. Each web service, worker and cron job gets these environment variables, which most HTTP clients use without any setup:
| Variable | Value |
|---|---|
HTTPS_PROXY, HTTP_PROXY | The proxy, http://appentic-outbound:8888 |
NO_PROXY | Addresses that skip the proxy, such as private address ranges and web services a traffic rule restricts |
They're also set in lower case. Clients that use them include Python's requests and httpx, curl, Ruby's Net::HTTP and Go's net/http. For Node.js, use a client that reads HTTPS_PROXY, or configure the proxy in your HTTP agent.
The proxy carries web requests (HTTP and HTTPS). Connections that don't use a proxy, such as a direct database connection to another company's server, still leave from your service's own machine.
Appentic manages these variables, and they appear on the project's Environment page. If you already set one of them yourself, Appentic doesn't overwrite it and doesn't add the proxy variables. The project's Events page says so. Remove your own variable to use the fixed outbound address.
Move it or turn it off
- Move it. Choose another machine and click Move. The address becomes that machine's address.
- Turn it off. Click Turn off and confirm. Your services restart once and reach the internet from their own machines again.
You can't remove the chosen machine while the fixed outbound address uses it. Move the address to another machine first.
Price
A fixed outbound address has a monthly service fee, shown on the Turn on button and billed by the second. Its proxy uses 32 MB of memory on its machine, listed as Fixed outbound address on the project's Resources page. See How billing works.
